Five weekend ideas around Kuala Lumpur (that aren't the mall)

Malls are cool, cheap and everywhere - it is easy to spend every weekend in one. But there is a lot more to the Klang Valley. Here are five outings that make a good change of scene.

1. Batu Caves

Climb the colourful staircase to the limestone caves and temple just north of the city. Go early to beat the heat, keep a firm grip on snacks and bags (the monkeys are bold), and dress modestly, as it is a place of worship.

2. Petaling Street

Kuala Lumpur’s old Chinatown is full of street food, heritage shophouses and markets. Wander the surrounding lanes for murals, old coffee shops and some of the city’s best snacks.

3. KL Forest Eco Park

A patch of rainforest right in the city centre, with a canopy walkway that takes you up among the treetops - and views of the city’s towers through the leaves.

4. Putrajaya

The government capital is known for its pink-domed mosque, wide boulevards and lake. It is lovely at sunset. Visitors to the mosque are lent robes if needed and should check visiting times before they go.

5. Fireflies at Kuala Selangor

A little further out, but worth the trip: take an evening boat ride along the river to see trees full of blinking fireflies. Go on a dry night for the best chance of seeing them.

And one more: a morning that stays with you

Once a month, students from different universities spend a Saturday morning at a refugee community centre with GO>MORE - making crafts, drawing and playing games with the children. No views, no shopping, but many students say it is the weekend they remember most.
