The first few weeks in a new country are full of big things - enrolment, housing, finding your classes. It is often the small things that catch you out. Here are a few we hear about again and again from new students.
Always carry an umbrella
Afternoon storms can appear out of nowhere, especially during the monsoon seasons. A small umbrella in your bag will save you from arriving at class soaked.
Bring a jacket indoors
It is hot outside, but lecture halls, shopping centres and trains are often very cold. A light jacket or hoodie makes long days in air-conditioning much more comfortable.
Get a Touch ’n Go card early
The Touch ’n Go card is used on trains and buses, for parking and tolls, and in some shops. Getting one in your first week makes getting around much simpler.
Ride-hailing needs patience in the rain
Ride-hailing apps are a lifesaver, but expect long waits when it is raining or at rush hour. Leave extra time if you need to be somewhere.
“Not spicy” is relative
Malaysian food is one of the best parts of living here. If you are not used to chilli, ask for less - and taste before you take a big bite.
Ask for help
People in Malaysia are generally friendly and happy to help. If you are lost or unsure, ask. Most people will go out of their way to point you in the right direction.
Step outside your bubble
It is easy for life to shrink to your room and your classroom. Try one new thing in your first month - a club, a dinner, an outing. Our events calendar is a good place to start: everyone is welcome, and you will meet students from campuses all over the Klang Valley.
